Desktop App Overview

The Egnyte Desktop App provides fast real-time access to the files and folders stored in the cloud from the user's computer. Once connected, all Egnyte content can be accessed in the cloud will appear in a network drive in Windows File Explorer or a Volume on Mac Finder, allowing users  to view all the files and folders without having to sync them. Furthermore, they will also be able to select specific folders to be synchronized for access, even when they are offline.

This does not apply to Desktop App for Mac (Legacy version).

Availability

The Egnyte Desktop App is available to all customers for Windows and Mac. Only Admin and Power users can download and use the Egnyte Desktop App.

Recommended Hardware

  • 8GB RAM
  • 250MB for the initial install
  • 4GB of free disk space for each drive mounted by Egnyte so that the Desktop App can store a temporary copy of files accessed from the cloud
  • [Optional] Additional disk space to store folders that are marked for offline access

Features

Easily browse all the Egnyte files and folders that users can access directly from Mac Finder or Windows File Explorer. The Egnyte Desktop App will allow users to access all the files they have available in the cloud without requiring all the disk space to store them. Disk space is only occupied temporarily by files that are currently open or were recently opened. The Egnyte Desktop app will automatically download and upload files and folders as users create, rename, update, and delete them.

Egnyte Actions is a custom Egnyte context menu that provides quick and easy access to a variety of file management tools directly from the file’s context menu.

Integrations With Other Desktop Applications

Open, edit, and save files directly from Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop, Autodesk AutoCAD, and many more. Through the Desktop App, you can even access files with Office Online, share files through Slack, or send them directly to DocuSign to make collaboration more seamless than ever before.

Global File Locking

When one person opens a file using the app, the file will automatically be locked. As long as the file remains open, any other user attempting to access the same file will be notified of the lock if they're online and will not be able to edit or delete the file. The file will still be available for viewing. For more information on file locking, please refer to the file locking and versioning article.

The user interface for Egnyte Desktop App has been designed to provide a seamless way to access and search Egnyte files. This guide walks users through the various tabs and options available in the application.

Settings

This tab retains all the options from the previous Desktop App user interfaces except for the Home tab.

  • Drives: Drives can be added and configured from this tab.
  • Offline Folders: A list of folders marked for offline access.
  • Connected Folders: A list of connected folders.
  • Preferences: Set application settings from this tab.
  • Help: Learn more about Desktop App or contact Support for any issues.

The Profiles section allows users to manage and switch between different Egnyte accounts or domains without needing to log out and back in manually.

Sync Status Indicator

The sync status indicator will always be visible in Desktop App UI reflecting synchronization status of Offline folders, Connected folders and any ongoing uploads.

Support for Large Files

The Egnyte Desktop App supports opening and editing individual files up to your plan's max file size limit so all of your files can be opened and edited.

Home Tab

The Home tab is designed to boost productivity, streamline workflows, and provide quick access to key information and features. Additionally, the homepage is customizable, allowing users to show or hide widgets based on their preferences and workflow needs.

  • Advanced Search: Egnyte's Search feature allows users to quickly find files and folders using keywords. It supports advanced filtering by file name, content, metadata, and access permissions, ensuring precise and efficient results.
  • Shared and Private Folders: Quick links located below the search bar can be used to quickly navigate to the Shared and Private folders.
  • AI: The widget displays Knowledge bases or Smart Apps the user can access, listed by recent usage. Users can click Go to AI to navigate to the complete AI page. This will be available for customers with the AI add-on plan.
  • Bookmarks: Lists all the bookmarked folders.
  • Recents: The recent files widget lists up to 30 of the recent files accessed. 
  • Links: The Links widget lists the links shared and received by order of recency. 
  • Projects: The widget lists up to 30 project folders that users can access, listed by recent usage. This will be available to customers with Project Hub add-on.

Uploads and Locks Tab

The Files tab provides a list of ongoing uploads, manually locked files and skipped files.

  • Uploads: A list of ongoing and recent file uploads from the current device.
  • Locked Files: A list of manually locked files using the current device. (Available in DA Core only).
  • Skips: A list of failed uploads or downloads (unsynced content).

Locked files are currently available only for Desktop App Core for Mac. The feature will be implemented in Desktop App for Windows in a future version.

AI Tab

Egnyte’s AI Assistant is an AI-powered assistant that helps users boost productivity by delivering relevant information at their fingertips. Users can interact by asking questions via text or voice, explore suggested prompts, and receive instant, relevant responses.

Project Center Tab

Project Center is a centralized workspace to create projects and search all folders marked as projects. Project Center is specifically designed for teams managing multiple active and upcoming projects.
