Building Code Analyst

Egnyte’s Building Code Analyst is an AI-driven agent purpose-built for Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) users. It addresses the high cognitive burden of consulting disparate building code requirements across jurisdictions by providing a unified, searchable, and context-aware platform. Rather than speeding professionals through tasks with shortcuts, it removes low-value, repetitive research steps so their expertise can remain firmly focused on creative and technical challenges.

The feature is available to the customers on the AEC Essentials, AEC Elite, or AEC Ultimate plans.

Configuration Steps

There are two entry points to configure the Building Code Analyst.

  • Navigate to AI -> Agents and click on Configure option on the Building Code Analyst tile.
  • Select Continue to proceed.

The other entry point is also from the AI menu where administrators can select Create New -> Agent.

In this flow, the user will need to select Building Code Analyst from the list of available templates and then click on Use this template to proceed.

In some cases, Power users will also be able to configure the agent if the Allow Power Users to create Agents toggle is enabled from Settings -> Configuration -> AI.

Only one Building Code Analyst can be configured per domain.

Both of these flows will converge to a common configuration experience on the following screen. Egnyte will prompt the user with files that have been identified as possible building code documents to streamline the configuration process.
From here, a user can select from 3 options as View auto-detected files, Continue, and Close.

  • View auto-detected files - The user can review a complete list of identified building code documents and preview each file by selecting the eye icon, or remove a file by selecting the X adjacent to the file that has been misidentified.
Select Save & Continue to automatically apply all remaining files as source data and bring the user to the final step of the Agent configuration.

  • Continue - The user accepts the auto-identified building code documents as source data for the agent and proceeds to the final configuration step.
  • Close - The user cancels the configuration process.

Once a user is on the final configuration screen, they can customize the Agent name and Description by selecting the respective field and typing, or select a new Agent Icon by selecting the dropdown on the Icon field.

Users can configure the sources for the agent as Egnyte and/or Web search.

Once the Agent is configured as desired, select the Save option to complete the setup process.

- After the Agent is configured, any files that are tagged as Building Code will automatically be added as source data to the Agent.
- The agent will not be ready immediately for use. Upon configuring the Agent, the selected Agent sources will be processed and optimized for use. To understand the Agent’s progress and to get updates on availability, navigate to the AI section. The Building Code Analyst tile will display a status with a percentage complete.

Interacting with the Agent from AI Menu Option

Once the agent setup is complete, users can interact with the agent by selecting the Building Code Analyst tile from the AI menu.

This will open the Building Code Analyst interface, where users can start by selecting mandatory Jurisdiction and Code Year filters. The values in these filters are auto-populated based on the source(s) selected for the agent. Select the respective radio buttons.

Selecting these filters will reduce the number of Egnyte source files down to just those that meet the respective criteria.

Users can optionally select the desired value(s) from the Building Type dropdown to further filter down their results.

After applying these filters, if users wish to hand select specific files that meet the respective criteria, they can select the Edit option.

The Edit option will open a pop-up where files can be checked or unchecked for use on the next Agent query.  Some files may be disabled due to the selected Jurisdiction and Code year filters.

Once the mandatory filters are applied, the chat input will be enabled and users will be able to ask a natural language question of their building code files.

The Agent will display the response progress while analyzing the question and will highlight key terms and documents it is using to generate a complete response.

Once a response is provided, users will see in-line citations, indicated by the number enclosed in a black circle, along with the source documents used at the bottom of the generated response.

Selecting an in-line citation will open a pop-up where users can view the specific passage used to generate the respective section of the response, along with an option to toggle to other in-line citations in the header, or select the source document to view the source in its entirety.

Users can then ask follow up questions by inputting a new question, start a New chat, and view the History.

Interacting with the Agent from AI Side Panel

An alternate entry point to access the Building Code Analyst is available from the contextual entry point of Egnyte’s AI Assistant.

Users can select the Building Code Analyst from the dropdown at the top.

Select Configuration Options to prepare the Agent by selecting the mandatory Jurisdiction and Code years filters, along with the optional Building type filter, or adjust Sources by selecting the Edit button.

After the mandatory filters have been set, select the < icon adjacent to Configuration Options to return to the main Building Code Analyst screen. The input field to ask a question would be enabled.

Editing the Agent

From the AI menu, a user can select the three-dots icon -> Edit on the Building Code Analyst tile.

Editing the Agent will open the Agent configuration screen where users can alter the Agent name, Description, Icon or Sources. After making an edit, select Save to save the changes.

Users can also edit the agent from the Settings menu

Reviewing Source Files

From the AI menu, a user can select the three-dots icon -> Review files option on the Building Code Analyst tile.

Selecting Review files opens a pop-up that will allow a user to review the automatically extracted values (Jurisdiction, Code Year, and Building Type) from each building code file and correct them if they were extracted inaccurately.

By selecting the downwards caret adjacent to a file the extracted values will be shown.

Edit these values by clicking on the respective field and choosing from the available options, and then select Save.

Error Handling

In rare cases, auto-extraction of Jurisdiction, Code year, and Building Type values may fail on certain files. These files will not be considered in Agent responses until the errors are corrected.

Users can resolve this from the Building Code Analyst tile in the AI menu where a red exclamation icon will be shown. A user can either select Click here in the tooltip, or while reviewing the files.

This same warning will be displayed from the Agent execution screen. Selecting Click here to resolve will navigate a user to the Review files screen.

On the Review files screen, the files that contain missing values will also be highlighted via a red exclamation icon.

Select the downward caret adjacent to each file, populate the missing values, and select Save to resolve.

Once this is complete, the files will be processed and included in future Agent responses when the processing is complete.

To get an update on processing files, navigate to the Edit Agent screen, select View processing files from the execution screen, or hover over the Processing files tag on the Building Code Analyst tile from the AI menu and select View sources being processed.

Each of these entry points will open a pop-up that will list all files that are either still being processed, or files that are unsupported by the agent.

Files with an orange clock icon adjacent to them are still being processed while files with a red exclamation next to them are unsupported and should be removed as source data.

To remove unsupported files, select the Remove unsupported files button.
