Desktop App for Windows v 3.28.0 - Desktop Configurations (General Availability)

External Release Notes: Desktop App for Windows v 3.28.0 (September 2, 2025)

New Features And Improvements

Desktop Configurations (General Availability)

The Desktop Configurations feature is now moving from Limited Availability to General Availability. This release introduces several critical improvements that address previous constraints and enable full production use:

  • Change to Allow users to add drives setting.

    • The current setting Allow users to add drives will be renamed to Allow users to manage drives.
    • The functionality will also change when the setting is disabled:
      • Users will no longer be able to add or retain manually configured drives.
      • Any existing manual drives will be removed, leaving only the drives defined in the configuration.
  • Immediate configuration application: When the first drive is added and configuration is available, the Desktop App will now apply it immediately. A restart will no longer be required.
  • Removal of default manual drive: Once the first configuration is applied, the default manually added drive will be removed, ensuring only configuration-defined drives remain.

This feature, previously in Limited Availability, is now available to all customers.

Search in This Folder

We have reintroduced the Search in this folder option, now compatible with the new Desktop App interface. It is available in the Egnyte Actions menu (right-click).

When used, a search window opens with the selected folder shown at the top-left of the search view.

The search query field in the top right corner is pre-filled with the folder name (for example, “Administration”). Users should replace the pre-filled text with their own query to search within the selected folder. This behavior will be improved in a future update.

Clearer Messaging for Desktop App Upgrade Setting

We updated the Desktop App upgrade setting in the Web UI to better reflect its actual behavior.

  • Location: Settings -> Configuration -> Applications -> Desktop
  • Previous messaging: Notify users about Desktop App upgrade
  • New messaging: Automatically upgrade to the new Desktop App version

This is a visual update only — the functionality remains the same. When enabled, the Desktop App automatically upgrades to the newest version.

Issues Addressed

Improved Notification for Co-Edited Files

We updated the notification shown when a user attempts to rename, move, or delete a file that is currently being co-edited in Microsoft Office Online. The new wording more accurately explains that the file cannot be changed until all users have closed it, and that it will become available for deletion or renaming shortly thereafter.

Updated Messaging for Driver Installation Issues

We improved the message shown when the Desktop App driver fails to install due to antivirus interference. The updated text no longer references an outdated Desktop App version and provides clearer instructions for reinstalling.

Resolved Rare Self-Conflict Copies Issue

Fixed a rare edge case where the Desktop App could generate repeated conflict copies of the same file by the same user. Once triggered, the system continued creating new copies even after the file was updated to the latest version. This behavior has now been corrected.

Improved Performance when Loading Read-Only Folders

Addressed an issue where Windows Explorer’s handling of read-only folders could cause long loading times. The Desktop App now works around this behavior to improve performance in such cases.

Known Issues And Limitations

Folder Name Pre-Filled in Query Field

When using Search in this folder, the search field may be automatically pre-filled with the selected folder’s name. This does not affect the actual search scope. Users should replace the pre-filled text with the intended query.

This limitation has also been added to the Known limitations for Desktop App article.

Additional Information & Resources

How to Upgrade

Visit the Desktop App installers article to download and install the latest version of the Desktop App or update the existing app to the newest version on all the devices. It may take a few days for the latest version to propagate to all user devices. However, users can manually upgrade their app immediately after the release.
