While we constantly strive to provide you with best possible experience, there are some limitations to what we can do on the current versions of Desktop App. Here is the list of known limitations for Desktop App:
Desktop App for Windows
Co-Editing
- Co-Editing is not supported with Smart Cache connection for versions of Smart Cache below 2.7.
- If a user has an “ask” as a default co-editing setting, simultaneous opening of more than one MS Office document can result in an error.
- When opening a large Excel file in co-editing mode takes over 30 seconds, then the collaboration pop-up may appear for the second time.
- Starting or joining a co-editing session in the newest Microsoft integration when there is no default integration selected on the domain level by double-click will result in opening a document in Microsoft Office Desktop (previously the user was able to choose between Microsoft Office Desktop or Microsoft Office Online).
-
Co-Editing not triggered when Using Save As in Office. When using Save As in Office to save a file to Egnyte Drive via Browse or This PC, the file will be saved but co-editing will not initiate. This is due to a limitation in Microsoft Office's integration behavior.
Workaround: Select Egnyte as the storage location directly (instead of navigating through Browse or This PC). This ensures the file is saved correctly and co-editing is enabled.
Windows Explorer and Context Menu
-
Duplicate Egnyte entries appear in the right-click context menu after switching from v4.2.1 (or later) to an older version of the app. After switching to an older version of the Desktop App, Egnyte may appear twice in the Windows Explorer right-click context menu. This is a known limitation when moving between these versions and does not affect the functionality of the app.
Workaround: Upgrading to Desktop App v4.2.1 or a newer version will automatically resolve the duplicate entries. If upgrading is not possible, the duplicate entry can be removed by following these steps:
- Open PowerShell from the Start menu. Do not use Run as Administrator.
-
Run the following command:
Get-AppxPackage "*Egnyte*" | Remove-AppxPackage - Once the command completes, restart Windows Explorer:
- Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc).
- Locate Windows Explorer under the Processes tab.
- Right-click it and select Restart.
File and Folder Operations
- Mounting an ISO file directly from Desktop App is not supported. ISO files need to be first copied to the local drive or used from Connected Folders.
- Executable (.exe) files are not supported. See a detailed article here.
- Uploading files directly from iPhone to Egnyte drive on Windows 11 can occasionally fail, especially when transferring large numbers of images. We recommend copying files to the local drive first and then uploading them to the Egnyte drive.
Other
- On Windows 11 when using multiple desktops, clicking to open the Desktop App widget on one virtual desktop may switch the user to a primary desktop.
- A direct upgrade from versions 4.0.0_1 through 4.0.0_5 (early 64-bit beta versions) to 4.2.1 may result in missing registry entries, which can affect functionality (e.g., two-factor authentication). Recommended approach: Uninstall the affected version and install 4.2.1 cleanly.
Desktop App Core for Mac
System Requirements
- Desktop App Core requires macOS Ventura or higher.
Command Line Interface
- There is a difference in Command Line Interface usage between Desktop App Core for Mac and Desktop App for Mac. This is described in this article.
File Locking and Sync
- The application checks for open files every 30 seconds and renews or closes locks depending on whether the file is open. Files may remain locked for up to 30 seconds after closing.
- Some skipped items will remain on the skips list even after the skipped files are removed from the cloud drive. Clicking Retry All in the skips panel will resolve those items.
- If a skipped file event is generated in a synced folder (for example, a file is skipped due to unsupported characters), the file will be removed from the cloud until the skip is resolved.
Thumbnails and Previews
- Thumbnails and previews are available only for certain file extensions when listed in a folder. For other file types, previews become available after the file has been downloaded.
Context Menu and Permissions
- Some options for which the user does not have permission will not be visible in the context menu. For example, the rename and duplicate options will not be available in a read-only folder.
Running Alongside Legacy Desktop App
- The following limitations apply when Desktop App Core is running alongside the legacy Egnyte Desktop App for Mac (Egnyte Connect):
- A restart of Desktop App Core may be required for the co-editing prompt to appear.
- The Connected Folders feature might not function properly.
- There may be issues when connecting a drive that requires SSO.
Drive Labels and Reporting
- Drive labels are only partly adjustable. The drive will always include the application name (Egnyte) as a prefix. The label can be customized when multiple drives are connected; however, the "Egnyte – " prefix will always remain.
- In audit reports, Desktop App Core is presented as Desktop App. There is no dedicated reporting distinction between the two.
Smart Cache
- Currently, only group-based access is supported for connecting to Smart Cache.
Desktop Link Creation
- The Desktop Link Creation feature is not available in Desktop App Core in the same form as on Windows:
- The Copy Desktop Link option is not available under the Share context menu.
- There are no preferences for this feature in the app settings.
Connected Folders from External Drives
- The following limitations apply when using Connected Folders with external drives:
- Only NTFS and exFAT file system drives are supported.
- Connected Folders are removed and sync is stopped if the external drive is disconnected, even briefly. A new connection must be established manually to resume syncing.
- Connected Folders are also removed and sync is stopped when the PC is restarted. Manual reconnection is required to restart syncing. There are no issues when the PC is put to sleep or locked.
- External drives with storage up to 4 TB are supported.
Desktop App for Mac
- On macOS Monterey, problems may occur when opening a file after moving it to a different folder.
- Co-editing is not supported with Smart Cache connection for versions of Smart Cache below 2.7.
-
Currently not supported on macOS v 26 Tahoe.
