Desktop App for Windows v 4.4.0 - Adaptive Block Caching General Availability

External Release Notes: Desktop App for Windows v 4.4.0 (May 27, 2026)

New Features and Enhancements

Adaptive Block Caching General Availability

We are excited to announce that with this release Adaptive Block Caching (ABC) has reached General Availability (GA).

Adaptive Block Caching (ABC) is a next-generation caching technology built into the Egnyte Desktop App, designed to transform how teams work with large and complex files by intelligently streaming and syncing only what is necessary for a given period of time. This means faster file access, smoother performance, and a more responsive experience.

This GA release delivers a robust set of new features and improvements to enhance user control and visibility.

Adaptive Block Caching is currently being rolled out in phases over coming weeks for all customers with the Specialized File Handler add-on or on the new AEC plans (AEC Essentials, AEC Elite, AEC Ultimate). To enable this feature, contact our Products team

Cache Utilization Status in Desktop App UI

The Desktop App's bottom status bar now displays the total amount of ABC cache in use across all connected profiles. Hovering over the indicator shows a per-domain breakdown. This gives users immediate visibility into cache consumption.

Clear Cache Option

The Desktop App now includes a Clear Cache action for ABC drives. Users can trigger a safe cache cleanup from within the application in order to free space on their local drive or clean unused cache files. This option will only clean unused files, any files that are open will remain in cache and will not be purged.

Adaptive Cache Size Allocation

The cache size configuration control has been redesigned for clarity and predictability. The setting previously labeled Eviction Threshold is now called Cache Size. Under the new model, the configured size represents the cache's normal resting state, not a hard ceiling. The cache can temporarily grow beyond this size when a user is actively working with large files (provided there is sufficient free disk space), and will automatically shrink back once those files are no longer in active use. The system also maintains a minimum reserved cache space to guarantee baseline operation even under disk pressure.

Cache Warming Notification Improvements

Cache Warming success notification now includes additional data, such as number and size of cached files.

Metadata Sidecar

Users can now use Egnyte Actions with a media file on an ABC drive and view rich, read-only media metadata, including codec, resolution, frame rate, duration, and similar attributes, without opening the file or triggering a full file download. The feature is optimized for large video files and is designed to support the file browsing and editorial decision-making workflow that media editors rely on before importing content into applications like Adobe Premiere Pro.

Issues Addressed

Unusual Host File Entry Added During Desktop App Installation

The Desktop App installer was adding an unexpected entry containing non-standard characters to the Windows host file on affected machines. The Desktop App installer has been updated and no longer modifies the host file in this way.

Files in Local Cache Being Moved to Trash After Desktop App Reinstall

The files stored in local cache could be moved to the trash a short time after reinstalling the Desktop App, instead of syncing correctly with the cloud. The Desktop App now correctly handles local cache data during reinstallation, ensuring files are preserved and synced as expected.

Desktop App Login Failure When Email Domain Did Not Match Egnyte domain

The Desktop App could fail to authenticate a user whose email address domain did not exactly match their Egnyte domain. The app would display a No Matching Domain error and prevent login even when the user's credentials were valid. The Desktop App now correctly resolves the Egnyte domain from a user's email address during the login flow.

Files With ".~" in the Middle of the Filename Not Syncing to the Cloud

The files containing the sequence .~ in the middle of their filename were not being uploaded to the cloud by the Desktop App.

Sporadic File Lock Errors When Using AutoCAD

AutoCAD lock files (.dwl and .dwl2) associated with drawings opened by other users would generate unexpected lock and delete error notifications for users without opening the drawings. The Desktop App now handles AutoCAD lock file operations more accurately, significantly reducing sporadic lock notifications in collaborative AutoCAD environments.

Installer Corruption When Incorrectly Using Reboot Suppression

Fixed a situation where the incorrect use of upgrade parameters, specifically Reboot=ReallySuppress without ED_UPDATE_ON_BOOT=1, caused the Desktop App to close before installation was complete, resulting in a corrupt DA installation.

Inability to Delete a Folder Inadvertently Added to An Offline Folder Sync Path

Users were unable to remove a folder that had been accidentally moved into a path configured as an Offline Folder sync root. The Desktop App now correctly handles this scenario, allowing users to resolve the unwanted sync without having to fully reconfigure their Offline Folder setup.

Blank UI on Launch For Devices With Certain AMD Integrated Graphics

The Desktop App would render a completely blank UI on launch on devices using certain AMD integrated graphics configurations (such as AMD Radeon Vega), making the application unusable. The Desktop App now automatically detects graphics driver incompatibility on startup and falls back to software rendering, ensuring the UI loads correctly on affected hardware.

Upgrade Residue When Upgrading From v3.x to v4.x Via Intune

Upgrading the Desktop App from version 3.31.1 to a 4.x version via Microsoft Intune would leave the previous version entry visible in the Windows Control Panel under Apps. While only the new version was functionally active, attempting to uninstall the old Control Panel entry would also affect the active installation. The installer now correctly removes all prior version entries during an upgrade.

How to Upgrade

Visit the Desktop App installers article to download and install the latest version of the Desktop App or update the existing app to the newest version on all the devices. It may take a few days for the latest version to propagate to all user devices. However, users can manually upgrade their app immediately after the release.
