Read Purview Labels from a File and Add as Egnyte Metadata

Egnyte can automatically detect and read Microsoft Purview sensitivity labels applied to files whenever they are uploaded, created, or edited in Egnyte. When a file with a Purview label is added to Egnyte, the label information is captured and stored as Egnyte metadata. This ensures that the file’s sensitivity classification remains visible and searchable within Egnyte, even if the label was applied outside Egnyte or before the file was stored there.

This functionality allows organizations to fully leverage existing label metadata on their files. Users can search, filter, and report on content in Egnyte based on Purview labels, providing better visibility and control over sensitive data—regardless of whether the label was applied through Egnyte’s native Purview integration or by another system.

This capability supports files with Purview labels that either do not enforce access control or encryption, as well as those with encryption Purview label (labels that enforce access control or encryption).

View Metadata

Open a file in preview in the Web UI. This Egnyte metadata is visible under Details in a custom (and non-modifiable) Egnyte metadata namespace named MIP Label

If the Content.SuperUser permission is not provided through the configuration above, Egnyte can only read the Purview label from files that carry Purview labels that don’t enforce access control or encryption.

Scenario 2: Egnyte Domain with an Existing Microsoft 365 Content Source Yet to be Authorized for Importing Purview Labels

Refer to the steps listed here under Update an Existing Microsoft Source to Import Purview Labels section.

Please wait for at least 30 minutes after authorizing the Microsoft 365 content source for this feature to take effect.

Scenario 3: Egnyte Domain Where a New Microsoft 365 Content Source Should Be Added

Refer to the steps listed here under Add a New Microsoft Source to Import Purview Labels section.

Please wait for at least 30 minutes after adding a new Microsoft 365 content source for this feature to take effect.
