Egnyte Connect Desktop App for Windows Best Practices

Here are some best practices to help you get the most from the Egnyte Connect Desktop App for Windows.

1. Prevent applications from scanning desktop app folders

If you have any applications that will scan a lot of files at a time (i.e. antivirus software, malware detectors, file indexers, etc.) set exclusions that will prevent them from scanning the Desktop App. For antivirus software, ensure that you exclude the drives used by the desktop app from virus scans and any type of realtime protection. We also recommend configuring anti-virus software to prevent them from scanning network drives to prevent a full scan on the domain. Without this option, the anti-virus application may request all files accessible to the user in Egnyte which results in extremely high bandwidth usage and performance issues due to downloads and lock requests from Egnyte.

2. Disable the Preview Pane in Windows Explorer

We recommend disabling the Preview Pane to improve performance by avoiding unnecessary download activity as you browse content in the drive.

3. Disable Details pane on Windows 7

If you are running Windows 7, we recommend disabling the details pane as it consumes a lot of bandwidth.  This setting can be found under "Organize" --> "Layout" --> "Details pane".

4. Avoid uploading large amounts of data at one time

We do not recommend using the desktop app for migrating large amounts of data at once (ie. more 30-40 GB at a time or 2x the remaining amount of disk space on the machine). The desktop app temporarily uses up to 2x the amount of disk space when new content is added (one copy to edit and one copy that is queued for upload). This ensures that users have immediate access to newly added content without the risk of file corruption. The storage used is only temporary and is cleared once the files are uploaded.

Also note that adding large numbers of small files may take longer than expected due to overhead of processing files for upload.

5. Map to Specific Folder (Optional)

You have the option to map directly to a specific folder you work in to avoid having to traverse your Egnyte file structure. In Settings, click "Configure" and type the desire path in the "Cloud start path" field.  The Cloud start path format is as follows: /Private/{username}/{folder_name} or /Shared/{folder_name}. Please ensure that you have permissions for the folder you map to.

6. Avoid using unsupported file types like active database files.

Avoid using unsupported file types like active database files. Common examples include pst, eml, odb, qbb and mdb files. Using such files within the Desktop App can result in extremely high bandwidth usage and introduces the possibility of data loss or corruption.

7. Avoid placing shortcuts in Desktop App folders

While it's possible to create shortcuts in Desktop App folders, we recommend against using shortcuts in any Desktop App folders as it can result in slower performance and higher use of bandwidth.
