Access Folder Options
Folder Details & Options can be accessed from the three-dots menu -> More actions -> Details and Options.
Users can also find them by selecting a folder and choosing Details & Options from the context menu in the Web UI.
Folder Descriptions
If a user has Full or Owner permissions to a folder, they can write a folder description. This is a great way to differentiate folders with similar names or provide information about the contents of the folder. The folder description will be visible to all users with access to the folder.
To add a folder description, open Details & Options and scroll down to the Description section. Click the Edit icon, type in a description, and click Save. Descriptions can be seen from the Web UI and mobile apps.
Delete and Move Permissions
Admins and users with Owner permissions can choose to grant or revoke delete and move permission for a folder. The fixed folder setting allows Admins and folder owners to prevent users with full permissions from moving, deleting, or renaming the folder.
These folder settings can be found under the Options tab of the Details & Options dialog box.
Turning this setting on enables Admins to empower their users while simultaneously protecting against accidental deletions of valuable content.
Keep these details in mind when using this setting:
- Egnyte supports four different levels of folder access: Owner (Download/Edit/Upload/Delete + Permissions Management), Full (Download/Edit/Upload/Delete), Editor (Download/Edit/Upload), and Viewer (Preview/Download). In addition, Viewer-Only permissions are also available for certain customers. Click the link to learn more about folder access levels.
- This setting is not enabled by default; Admins or folder owners must allow this setting on a per-folder basis. Unlike some other folder options settings, this setting is not inherited by sub-folders.
- Marking a folder as fixed does not prevent a user with Full permissions from deleting files or sub-folders within that folder.
- Top-level folders are always fixed, meaning only Admins and users with Owner permissions can move, delete, or rename them.
- Users with at least Viewer permissions can copy top-level folders.
Folder Notifications
Users can configure folder notifications by selecting Details & Options and clicking on the Options tab. The folder notifications set here will apply only to the user setting them. These and other folder notifications are discussed in-depth in a separate article.
Settings for Folder Options
Admins can choose to configure the folder options to be managed only by Admins or by Folder Owners as well.
- Navigate to Settings -> Configuration -> General.
-
Select Admins Only or Admins and Folder Owners as the choice. By default, it is set to Admins and Folder Owners.
- Click on Save Changes.
The folder options will be disabled for the Folder Owners if manage folder options is set to Admins only.
Inherit Folder Options to Sub-Folders (Limited Availability)
When the user makes changes to the folder options, they can choose if the changes are inherited to the sub-folders.
- Make changes to the folder options and click on Save.
- Select the option for application of the changes and click on Apply.
- This folder only: The settings will be applicable only to the selected folder and the sub-folders will not be affected.
- This folder and the subfolders (respect overrides): This is the default selection where the settings are applicable to the selected folder and its subfolders. Any of the overridden custom settings will be respected in this case. The future subfolders will automatically inherit the settings; however, users can manually change the setting, as needed.
-
This folder and all subfolders (override everything): The settings will be applicable to the selected folder and all of its subfolders including the ones with custom settings. The future subfolders will automatically inherit the settings; however, users can manually change the setting, as needed.
