Egnyte Messaging Extension for Microsoft Teams
The Egnyte Messaging Extension Integration allows users to effectively integrate Egnyte's powerful file sync, sharing capabilities. This article covers how to use Egnyte Messaging Extension for Microsoft Teams Integration. This integration is currently available in both Web and Desktop version of Microsoft Teams.
Egnyte for Microsoft Teams enables safe links sharing, users can simultaneously collaborate on the files (eg. Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, G-Doc) without leaving MS Teams, all changes are automatically saved back to Egnyte storage.
Benefits
- All shared and uploaded files and links are stored at Egnyte.
- Preview files within the Microsoft Teams App
- Files uploaded from the local storage are automatically uploaded to Egnyte storage, straight away sharing link is auto created that can be posted on the channel or chat.
- Share files from Egnyte: Selecting this option will generate a link enabling channel members to access the file. File permissions are always consistent with the domain or folder settings at Egnyte.
- Other than Egnytes storages are disabled.
Perquisites
- Admin completed Egnyte MS Teams activation on both the Microsoft Teams and in the Egnyte Admin Center. Activation affects all domain users or all users in selected groups using Microsoft Teams.

Requirements
- Individual Microsoft Teams License
- In order to provide real-time collaboration of MS Office files, Microsoft Office subscription is required
Getting Started
- Sign in to Microsoft Teams account with your credentials.
- Login to Egnyte domain with your credentials.
Once it’s done you can start using Microsoft Teams with Egnyte as Storage Provider for Messaging Extension MS Teams.
Sharing Egnyte files via Teams
You can share Egnyte content via Teams in two different ways:
• Upload content from your local machine: By choosing this option, Egnyte will store the newly uploaded file in the default folder. Default folder needs to be defined individually for each MS Teams instance (Web and Desktop).
• Share files from Egnyte: Selecting this option will generate a link within the channel folder, enabling all channel members access the file with selected permission settings. Permissions to the file are always consistent with Egnyte domain and folder settings.
To upload a local file in a Channel or Chat:
- Start a Teams, Chat conversation.
- In the chat window, click on the Egnyte icon.
- In the pop-up window you can specify whether to upload a new file or select a file that already exists on Egnyte.
Click Upload on the window bottom. The Egnyte Upload File window opens. - At first, you must select a default folder in the cloud to which a given file should be uploaded. Default folder applies to your individual account and is saved for the respective devices (Web, Desktop) you use MS Teams on.
To do that click on Click to select folder option in the window. The folder structure appears. Navigate to a folder where you would like to have the file uploaded and click Select.
Default folder path is displayed during upload and can be changed any time. - Drag and drop the file(s) you want to upload or click browse to navigate through your local file structure. You can upload up to 5 files at once.
- At this point, file is uploaded to the cloud, but additionally you can share it. Egnyte shows uploaded file(s) with sharing options, consistent with folder and domain permissions. You can share the file to.
- Users with permissions – this is an equivalent of Egnyte direct link (only Egnyte users that have permissions to the folder where file is located will be able to open it)
- All users in the company – this is an equivalent of Egnyte share link with access granted to given File Server users (only users that are part of given Egnyte domain will be able to access it)
- Anyone - anyone with the access to the link can open it.
- After “share” button is clicked, file card is opened. You can add additional text to the message and click send.
- Now the recipient(s) can open the link to your Egnyte file directly from the chat window. Following options are available on the file card after the message is sent.
- Click on Preview to view the file without leaving the Teams interface
- Click on open in Egnyte to open the file in the Egnyte WebUI.
To share an Egnyte file in a Teams Channel or Chat:
- Start a Teams or Chat conversation.
- In the chat window, click on the Egnyte icon
- Click Egnyte. In the pop-up window you can specify whether to upload a new file or select a file that already exists on Egnyte.
- You can either choose Recents to share a file from a recently opened files list or select All Files to locate a file in the Egnyte structure.
- Once a file is selected, depending on domain and folder permissions, you can pick one of the sharing options. You can share the file to:
- Users with permissions – this is an equivalent of Egnyte direct link (only Egnyte users that have permissions to the folder where file is located will be able to open it)
- All users in the company – this is an equivalent of Egnyte share link with access granted to given File Server users (only users that are part of given Egnyte domain will be able to access it)
- Anyone - anyone with the access to the link can open it.
- After the “share” button is clicked, the file card is opened with information about the file. You can add additional text to the message and click send.
- Now the recipient(s) can open the link to your Egnyte file directly from the chat window.
- There are additional actions that you can take on the file card after the message is sent:
- Click on Preview to view the file without leaving the Teams interface
- Click on Open in Egnyte to open the file in Egnyte WebUI.
Adding Egnyte files Tab
- For every channel and chat a dedicated Egnyte tab is automatically generated and can be added. This is a one time action for Chat or Channel.
- To add Egnyte Tab use “+” button on the top of the Chat or Channel
- Select Egnyte app
- Save your choice on the consent screen with Save button
- And Egnyte Tab is visible for every team member.
Accessing Egnyte files Tab
- In the Egnyte Files Tab you can see and review all shared files within the channel or chat.
- There are additional actions that you can take on the file card:
- Open in Egnyte opens the file in Egnyte WebUI
- Preview to view the file without leaving the Teams interface
Known Issues And Limitations
- MS Teams application doesn't support Mobile web for the Egnyte Tab extension. Please use MS Teams Desktop and Web Client for this integration.
- Internet Explorer 11 is officially NOT supported by this integration. While most features should work, we are not actively working to support this browser.
