How to Download Files and Folders Using Egnyte Desktop Apps

When you connect a Desktop App, you mount an Egnyte drive and can download files and folders in one of the following ways.

Downloading Content Using Desktop App for Windows

1. Double-Click on a File:

   - To download and open a file, simply double-click on it in the mounted drive. The file will be downloaded to your local system and automatically opened using the default program associated with its file type.

2. Sync Folder for Offline Access:

   - To ensure offline access to files, right-click on the desired folder in the mounted drive. From the context menu, select "Sync folder for offline access." This action will download the folder and its contents to your local hard drive, allowing you to access them even when offline.

3. Copy/Move Files from Cloud Folder to Local Drive:

   - To copy or move a file from the cloud folder to a folder on your local hard drive, navigate to the desired file in the mounted drive. Right-click on the file and choose  "Copy" from the context menu. Then, navigate to the destination folder on your local hard drive, right-click, and select "Paste" to complete the copy.  Alternatively, you can click and drag the desired file into the destination folder for a move.

4. Download Through Software Access:

   - When using software applications like Microsoft Word, Excel, or other programs that access files, selecting the "Open" or "Import" option within the application will trigger the download of the selected file. The file will be downloaded to your local system before it can be opened or edited within the software.

1. Double-Click on a File:

   - Similar to Windows, you can download and open a file by double-clicking on it in the mounted drive. The file will be downloaded to your local system and automatically opened using the default program associated with its file type.

2. Click "Cloud" Icon to Download a Folder or a File:

   - On Mac, you have the option to download a folder or a file by clicking on the "cloud" icon located next to the file in the mounted drive. Clicking on the icon will initiate the download process, and the file will be saved to your local system. You achieve the same if you right-click on the folder in Finder and you select the Download now option.

3. Sync Folder for Offline Access:

   - To sync a folder for offline access, right-click on the desired folder in the mounted drive and select "Sync folder for offline access" from the context menu. This action will download the folder and its contents to your local hard drive, allowing you to access them even when you are offline.

What Happens to Downloaded Files if I Remove the Mounted Drive?

When you remove the mounted drive, files downloaded through methods other than “Copy/Move files to local drive” will be removed as well. 

Can Downloads Happen Without My Explicit Action?

Any software that accesses the file, such as office applications, may initiate a download process before opening the file. 

Can I Download Multiple Files/Folders?

Yes, just simply select multiple files/folders in the Explorer/Finder window and drag and drop them onto your local drive or (in case of Desktop App Core for Mac) click on the Download Now button.

When I Download a File, Which Version of the File Gets Downloaded?

The latest version of the file gets downloaded by default. If you need to download the older specific version, you need to access the file via WebUI (right-click on the file in Explorer/Finder and in the context menu select View in cloud). Then select the Versions & History option from the action menu to open the versions dialogue, and finally, from the dialogue select the Download icon against the version you want to download.
