Description
Some folders and files that are supposed to have an icon overlay show no such visual indicator.
Causes
The number of different visual indicator icons that the system can support is limited by the amount of space available for visual indicators icons in the system image list. There are currently fifteen slots allotted for this function, some of which are reserved by the system. All registered visual indicator icons are visible in the Windows registry under:
- Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers
It would have been best for Egnyte's visual indicator icons to populate the earlier slots to avoid such a situation. Given this is built for Windows, Microsoft has preemptively assumed the initial slots.
For example, Microsoft's OneDrive application can place its overlays on the top of this list during installation or update.
Potential Solution(s)
- Open registry editor with admin permissions
- Go to the following registry path:
- Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers
- Manually remove some icons from the top of this list so that the visual indicator icons from Egnyte are in the TOP TEN
- Restart computer
Keep in mind that OneDrive will again place its icons at the top of this list upon the next update. Given this is the case, it will be necessary to repeat these steps to fix this occurrence. Please bookmark this page for your records.
