Egnyte is aware of an issue affecting the Desktop App's visibility in the Windows Explorer left-hand navigation pane following the Windows security update KB5094126.
UNC paths remain fully accessible and are not affected by this issue.
Issue Description
After installing the Windows security update KB5094126, some users may find that the Egnyte Desktop App no longer appears in the Explorer left-hand navigation pane.
This is a known Microsoft issue that also affects other applications such as OneDrive and Dropbox. The root cause is User Account Control (UAC) being fully disabled on the affected machine.
What is User Account Control?
User Account Control (UAC) is a Windows security feature that helps prevent unauthorized changes to the operating system. When enabled, Windows will ask for confirmation or an administrator password before allowing actions that could affect system settings or other users. It is enabled by default on all modern versions of Windows and is recommended to keep on for security reasons.
For more information, see How User Account Control works — Microsoft documentation.
How to Fix It?
Enabling UAC on the Affected Machine
To enable UAC on the affected machine:
- Open the Start menu and search for User Account Control.
- Select Change User Account Control settings.
- Move the slider to any position above the lowest setting and click OK.
- Restart the computer.
Users may need to contact their IT administrator to make these changes, as they require administrator rights on the machine.
Enabling UAC via Group Policy or Registry
If UAC was disabled via group policy or registry (EnableLUA=0), the navigation pane issue can only be resolved by re-enabling it by setting the registry key to:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System EnableLUA=1Be aware that re-enabling UAC changes the security posture of the machine and may affect legacy applications or workflows that were relying on UAC being disabled. Egnyte recommends testing this change on a few machines before rolling it out broadly. If re-enabling UAC is not feasible, UNC paths remain available as a fully supported alternative for accessing Egnyte files.
