WebEdit in Salesforce Integration - Issues with Google Chrome v142 or Newer

Overview

We have identified an issue affecting customers who use Egnyte’s Embedded UI inside Salesforce and attempt to open files using WebEdit. The problem appears only when using Google Chrome version 142 or newer.

Due to a new security feature introduced in Chrome, WebEdit may fail to launch when clicking Edit with WebEdit App from the Egnyte embedded view inside Salesforce.

This issue does not affect other browsers, and it does not impact opening files from Egnyte Web UI directly.

What a User May Experience

When users try to open a file (for example, .docx, .xlsx) from the Egnyte embedded component in Salesforce:

  1. Click Edit with WebEdit App .
  2. Instead of opening the file in the native desktop application (Word, Excel, etc), a user can experience one of the following:
    • Nothing happens
    • User may see a prompt asking to install WebEdit—even if it’s already installed.

This means Chrome is blocking WebEdit from communicating with the local system.

Root Cause

Starting with Chrome 142, Google introduced a new security feature called Local Network Access Restrictions.

This feature limits when websites can communicate with local applications or services. Google’s documentation is available here (for reference only, not required for the workaround).

Egnyte WebEdit relies on a secure local connection to launch its desktop application.  When Egnyte is embedded in Salesforce (inside an iframe), Chrome incorrectly blocks this communication—even if the site is added to the allowed list.

We have confirmed that disabling this Chrome feature restores expected WebEdit functionality.

Temporary Workarounds

The following workarounds are available until Google or Salesforce provides a fix:

1. Disable Local Network Access Restrictions in Chrome

Users can temporarily disable this feature to restore WebEdit functionality:

  1. Open Chrome and navigate to chrome://flags
  2. Search for:
    Local Network Access Restrictions
  3. Change the setting from Default to Disabled
  4. Restart Chrome

WebEdit should now work correctly from the Salesforce embedded view.

2. Use an Alternative Browser

This restriction is only applicable to Google Chrome.

WebEdit continues to function normally in:

  • Microsoft Edge
  • Firefox
  • Safari (Mac)

3. Use an Earlier Version of Chrome

Reverting to a pre-142 version of Chrome will avoid the issue. Please verify with any IT policies if applicable.

Status and Next Steps

We are monitoring updates from both Google and Salesforce, as the root cause is the new Chrome security behavior affecting iframe-embedded applications.

If users need assistance applying any workaround or have additional questions, please contact Egnyte Support.
