The Sync Deletes feature in Egnyte’s Migration App helps ensure data consistency during the True-Up phase of data migrations. It enables the admins to synchronize deletions that occurred in the source environment after the initial scanning of the data is complete. The admins can then choose to sync these deletions in the destination or opt out.
When enabled, this feature compares the source and destination environments during True-Up and provides the choice to remove files from Egnyte that were deleted from the source in the interim.
This is useful for keeping the migrated data clean and aligned with the latest state of the source.
Use Cases and Benefits
- Cloud Adoption Cleanup: Removes outdated or deleted files post-migration to reduce clutter.
- Data Accuracy: Ensures the Egnyte destination mirrors the active, up-to-date source environment.
- Storage Optimization: Prevents storing unnecessary or obsolete data in Egnyte.
- Efficient Collaboration: Ensures only current files are accessible post-migration.
To determine whether to opt in or out of Sync deletes, the admins can consider the following tip:
- For active environments with frequent file updates and deletions, enabling Sync Deletes ensures a cleaner migration.
- For archival purposes, admins may prefer to opt out and retain all files regardless of their current source status.
How to Use the Sync Deletes Feature
The Sync Deletes feature can be utilised once the initial sync is complete. The admin can navigate to Migration job actions -> True-up data and select their preferred choice for sync deletions.
How to Opt Out of Syncing Deletes
If the admins prefer not to sync deletions during True-Up, Egnyte provides a way to opt out of sync deletes.
They can select Sync Deletes to No from the true-up options or from the Scheduler page.
What to Expect
- When enabled, the feature detects and prompts the admins to confirm deletions during True-Up.
- The admins will have control over whether deletes are synced to the destination.
- Once confirmed, the deletion is permanent in the destination and will match the current state of the source.
What to Avoid
- DO NOT run True-Up without reviewing delete confirmations if the Sync Deletes feature is enabled as the admins may unintentionally delete valuable data.
Points to Note
- The feature is enabled by default to maintain parity between source and destination.
- Sync Deletes apply only after initial sync is complete. The admin can select their preferred choice from the True-Up options or scheduler.
- By default, Sync Deletes option is not selected under true-up options
- If multiple migration jobs are running, each job handles its delete confirmation independently.
