Folder Synchronization FAQ’s

Follow

Folder Synchronization (sync) is an optional feature on Smart Cache targeted for downloading the folder contents onto the local disk and allowing bi-directional sync of data to the cloud. It provides quicker and faster access to the data.

What are some of the best use cases for implementing Folder Sync?

  1. Used for Second copy ( On-Prem data ) as a backup requirement.
  2. Provides offline access support.
  3. Data needs to be synched frequently without explicit actions on the file(s) from Users.
  4. Used for real-time synchronization of local data with the Cloud and vice-versa in bi-directional sync.

What measures should be taken into consideration when setting up Folder Sync?

  1. Selectively identify specific folders or subfolders for syncing to avoid unintentional data sprawl.
  2. Regular monitoring of disk usage is necessary when Smart Cache VM is in use to avoid out of disk space issues.

What are some limitations or functions that Folder Sync cannot perform?

  1. This feature is not intended to be used for file collaboration such as editing or co-editing use-cases. It is recommended to use file(s) directly from the Smart Cache Desktop App or UNC path, which supports the use-cases and is backed by dynamic caching technology.
  2. Avoid selecting the entire “\Shared\” folder structure for this feature until and unless it's necessary, as it downloads complete data onto the disk.

- Folder sync data is not governed by Storage policies, so IT admins will need to monitor the disk space through Smart Cache device dashboard or through the Hyerpvisor dashboards.
- Disk usage is consumed by both Cache warming folders and Folder Sync folders separately, which means disk space used by cache warmed folders will be different from synced folders internally.
