How to Handle Unsynchronized Content on Storage Sync

As an Administrator, if you are notified of the unsynchronized folders/files either via email message or on the Storage Sync UI settings page, then you have following options to choose to handle the unsynchronized content:

Option 1) Move the Unsynced Content into a Folder that's Already Selected for Sync [Recommended]

This is one of the most simplest of the options where the Admin needs to move the file contents to an already selected folder under Sync through Windows Explorer.

Advantages with this option:

  • Easy remedial option.
  • By doing this, we will ensure that the content gets uploaded to Egnyte.
  • Any further modifications on these files will be synced to Cloud on a regular basis.

Disadvantages with this option:

  • Might slow down sync if the unsynced content is very large.
  • Users might experience slowdown during the up-sync time.

Option 2) Out-of-Band Upload to Cloud:

In this option admin can drag-and-drop folder(s) to Egnyte WebUI.  Alternatively, admin can use Desktop App or Migration App to upload the content to the cloud.

Advantages with this option:

  • Methodical approach to moving unsynced content.
  • Doesn't impact Storage Sync sync durations.

Disadvantages with this option:

  • Additional work for upload.
  • Any further modifications on these files need to be synced manually to the Cloud by Admin.

Option 3) Select the Unsynced Folder(s) or Parent Folder of Unsynced Folder(s) for Sync:

Not a preferred approach since Storage Sync can potentially run into disk constraints.

Advantages with this option:

  • Easiest remedial action in terms of admin work.

Disadvantages with this option:

  • Gets into Storage sprawl issues.
  • Increases sync payload times.

Depending on the use cases, the admin needs to choose the right option that suits them.
