Storage Sync is a light-weight virtualized app that enables the Egnyte hybrid deployment solution. It synchronizes files from the cloud to an on-premise storage repository. Even though Storage Sync is primarily used with hybrid deployments, it can also be leveraged as a migration tool to copy data from legacy network share over SMB to the Egnyte cloud.

This article outlines what is required in order to use Storage Sync for data migration. After reading this article, the Egnyte Administrator will be able to decide whether Storage Sync is the right migration tool, and will be able to derive a high-level time and effort estimate for migrating data using Storage Sync.

What Storage Sync can Migrate

Storage Sync is a viable solution for the following scenarios.

Data Size

If the source folder for migration is more than 16TB, you can split the migration into several smaller jobs, where each job migrates a subset of the data (<16TB) from your network share over SMB protocol.

Number of files and folders

10 Million

If the source folder for migration has more than 10 Million files and sub-folders, you can split the migration into several smaller migration jobs, where each job migrates a subset of the files and folders (< 10 Million) from your network share.

Data True-ups

If you are using Storage Sync only for data migration:

We recommend SyncBackPro to copy only the files that changed between migration jobs (from file server to Storage Sync). This will migrate only the changed files to the cloud instead of the entire data set again.

*Depends on the 3rd party software used.

Supported File Types

Note: The list represents the most commonly used applications by Egnyte customers. There are several other applications not specified in the list, which we are aware are being used by some of our customers. Given the slew of applications available to customers, we adopt a best-effort methodology to test the most commonly used applications. If there are applications neither in this list nor in the list of Unsupported Applications, we encourage customers to test it out on Storage Sync.

Microsoft Office Suite (.doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx, .ppt, .pptx)

Adobe Suite (.ps, .eps, .prn, .ai, .psd, .u3d, .prc, .indd)

Image files (.bmp, .jpeg, .gif, .tiff, .tif, .png, .pcx, .emf, .rle, .dib)

AutoDesk AutoCAD (.dwg, .dwt, .dxf, .dwf, .dst)

AutoDesk Revit (.rvt)

AutoDesk 3D files (.u3d, .prc)

Text Files (.txt, .rtf)

Compressed files (.zip)

Supported File Size

Default maximum of 10GB per file (Enterprise Plan supports 25GB per file). Check your plan details for more information.

Supported Folder Size

50,000 files/sub-folders per folder

If you have a folder with more than 50,000 files or sub-folders, split the parent folder into smaller folders with less than 50,000 immediate children.

Maximum Length of Filename

245 bytes (Windows limitation)

Files with title greater than 245 bytes will be skipped from migration. Please fix such file names before copying to the drive. On the Mac, we recommend A Better Finder Rename to fix file-name and path-name issues.

Maximum Length of Folder Path name in the Cloud

5000 bytes (Cloud limitation)

This is the maximum length of a folder and file path from the root folder (Shared or Private) on Egnyte. The length of the path from the root all the way to the filename cannot exceed 5000 bytes in the cloud.

What Storage Sync cannot Migrate

Storage Sync is not a viable solution for the following scenarios, but alternative options are described.

Create Top-level folders

You are required to first create top-level (seed) folders under the Shared folder on Egnyte cloud.

You can manually create them or migrate the folders in bulk using the Cloud Migration Manager.

Permissions Migration

Storage Sync does not migrate NTFS permissions from the network share to the cloud.

You can use Cloud Migration Manager to migrate permissions or apply permissions directly in the cloud.

Migrate Users and Groups

  1. Active Directory Migration: AD Kit
  2. Third-party SSO: Egnyte integrates with  SSO/SAML Providers

Migration Reports

Storage Sync does not generate migration reports on files that got migrated or excluded.

*Depends on the 3rd party program.

Use Audit Reports in the cloud to track files and folders that got migrated from Storage Sync.

Document Repositories that do not support SMB

Storage Sync cannot be used to migrate data directly from Linux Servers (or NFS mount points), SharePoint or other on-premise servers that do not support SMB.

  1. FTP can be used as a possible alternative to migrate from Linux Servers.
  2. For other source repositories, contact Professional Services.

Unsupported File Types

  • Database files (such as Microsoft Access, SQLite, QuickBook backups).
  • Microsoft Outlook Files (PST, OST file types).
  • Package files (Mac specific files such as Pages).
  • Resource Forks and Alternate Data Streams.

Requirements for Deploying Storage Sync

The following table details the requirements for using Storage Sync to migrate your data.

Requirements may be different for using Storage Sync has a hybrid platform for production data vs migration of data.

License Requirements

Paid Egnyte Account with a Storage Sync License.

*Please reach out to your Account Manager if you would like to purchase a Storage Sync License.

Virtual Infrastructure

VMware ESXi version 5.5 and 6 or newer

Windows Server 2012 with Hyper-V

Windows Server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V
