Accelerate Access to Files with the Turbo

Introduction

Turbo is the next generation hybrid technology platform for Storage Sync. This solution combines the performance and scalability aspects of Storage Sync along with many new and compelling end-user and administrator features as listed below.

  • Single Drive Letter: End-users can access files on Turbo with Egnyte Connect Desktop App installed on their laptop. This implies that users can access their files stored on Egnyte cloud or on Turbo through a single drive letter. When users are at home, Egnyte Connect Desktop App automatically connects to the cloud. When users are present in their office, Egnyte Connect Desktop App connects to the Turbo device if there is one deployed in their Local Area Network.
  • Global File Locking: With Turbo, Egnyte Connect Desktop App users can ensure that when a file is opened for editing, the file is locked and is not editable by any other user. Global File Locking is enforced if a user opens the file on residing on the Turbo device, and another user tries to open the same file in the cloud or on another Turbo device at a different physical location.
  • Automatic Discovery and Location Awareness: Users who travel between different offices can continue to use Desktop App to access files stored in Turbo devices at each location (if they are authorized to access Turbo device at each location). The Desktop App discovers the nearest Turbo device based on certain network tests (bandwidth and latency check) and connects to the appropriate device or the cloud. This way, users can easily move between offices and still access their files in the most optimal manner by using the Desktop App.
  • Cloud Management: Turbo devices can be easily monitored and managed in the cloud. IT administrators can check the device status for synchronization, authorize users or groups for Turbo access or perform software upgrades remotely for all the registered Turbo devices.

What does Turbo Release Candidate mean?

Turbo is currently a Release Candidate. This implies customers can deploy Turbo in a production environment. Turbo can be downloaded if you have purchased Storage Sync licenses and have at least one available license. Turbo Release Candidate has all the features and functionality we have committed to our customers for the General Availability release. We will roll out Turbo General Availability release after we obtain sufficient feedback from our customers who have used our Release Candidate.

System Requirements

Turbo is deployed as a virtual machine on VMware ESX or ESXi 5.5+/6.x or Hyper-V 2012 R2. For more information on ESX, please refer to the VMware product page.

Client operating systems supported are Windows 7, 8, 8.1, or 10.

VM Requirements

Minimum RAM 4 GB
Recommended RAM 8 GB
Minimum # CPUs 4
Recommended # CPUs 8
Minimum # Cores 4
Recommended # Cores 8

Data Volume

The default data disk is 40 GB. You can attach additional SCSI data disks and they will be added to the storage pool after you reboot the VM. Please do not extend existing disks.

2. Deployment

For VMware

a. Connect to your ESXi host via VMware vSphere client or vCenter

b. Click on "Deploy OVF Template" and provide the path to the OVA.

c. Turbo comes pre-configured with a 50 GB data disk. If you want a bigger disk capacity for your VM, add a new data disk (VMDK) and allocate desired disk capacity.

Note: Do not re-size the pre-configured data disk from its 50 GB limit

d. Start the VM by click on "Power on the Virtual Machine"

For Hyper-V

a. Extract the ZIP file for Turbo Beta for Hyper-V

b. In the Hyper-V Manager, under Actions click "Import Virtual Machine..." -->

c. Select the "Egnyte_Turbo" folder

d. On "Choose Import Type" page, select Copy the virtual machine

e. Turbo comes pre-configured with a 50 GB data disk. If you want a bigger disk capacity for your VM, add a new data disk (VMDK) and allocate desired disk capacity.

Note: Do not re-size the pre-configured data disk from its 50 GB limit

f. Right-click on the VM and select "Start" to power on the VM.

3. Open the console:

Best Practices

Please consider the following topics before deploying Turbo.

Deciding between Storage Sync and Turbo

Both Turbo and Storage Sync are hybrid file-sharing and collaboration technologies.

Storage Sync is useful in scenarios that require offline access to files, 3rd party applications that rely on SMB or drive paths, or support for Mac clients. Click here to learn more about Storage Sync.

If you will have a stable internet connection and Windows clients, Turbo is the hybrid storage solution of choice. Users can connect to Turbo through Egnyte Connect Desktop App, which administrators can mass deploy to users.  All file and folder edits are propagated to the cloud using real-time sync. Turbo uses Egnyte cloud-based authentication and does not require a separate access point or user account.

Before Setting Up Turbo

1. Ensure that Users and Groups are created in the Egnyte Cloud. For more information, please refer to the Users and Groups article on the Helpdesk.

2. Whitelist the following domains with any filters or firewalls in your environment:

  • <YOUR_EGNYTE_DOMAIN>.egnyte.com
  • sync-<YOUR_EGNYTE_DOMAIN>.egnyte.com
  • prod-logg8.egnyte-internal.com
  • *.egnyte-appliance.com
  • gcr.io
  • www.googleapis.com
  • ICMP

3. Ensure that the Hypervisor host is configured with the correct timezone and is aligned with an authoritative time server. This is a necessary pre-condition for Turbo VM to ensure that all the Egnyte services start-up and function correctly.  For further details on how to configure time synchronization:

Service Account

Open the console and login with the following credentials:

Username: admin

Password: turbocharged

Screen_Shot_2018-01-18_at_6.38.30_PM.png

You will be presented with the following options:

Screen_Shot_2017-07-27_at_13.44.00__1_.png

Set a Static IP

If your host network does not have DHCP enabled, the VM may fail to get an IP address dynamically. You will need to use the service account to assign a static IP address.

Select "1" and press enter. You will be prompted to enter the inputs to set a static IP.

Confirm Network Configuration is valid

Select "4" and press enter.

If you see the error "Breeze service is not running", please restart your VM.

If you see the error "Failed to get diagnostics data", you have no connectivity between the Internet and the VM. Please check your network connection.
