Accelerate Access to Files with the Turbo Beta


Egnyte Connect Desktop App provides you with seamless connectivity to files on the cloud. This can present latency issues if you have large files or limited internet bandwidth. Egnyte Turbo accelerates access to your data with on-premises caching. Experience improved performance, especially for large files, as files stored on the Turbo devices are served at LAN speed. Any files not stored on the Turbo device will still be accessed through the cloud. Egnyte Connect Desktop App & Turbo provides secure unified access to all of your Egnyte files from Windows File Explorer, regardless of their storage location.

Egnyte Connect Desktop App automatically discovers and connects to the nearest Turbo device when you are in the office. When you go home and no active Turbo device is within range, Desktop App will redirect requests to the cloud. Administrators can connect Desktop App users to Turbo devices and administer permissions from the cloud, with no end-user involvement.

What does Open Beta mean?

Turbo is currently a Beta product. The open beta allows customers to try out our new product and provide feedback on their experiences. Turbo is considered a beta product as we're still working on bringing the perfect user experience. The Turbo open beta is available for all Egnyte customers to opt in and is fully supported.

System Requirements 

Turbo is deployed as a virtual machine on VMware ESX or ESXi 5.5+/6.x or Hyper-V 2012/2012 R2. For more information on ESX, please refer to the VMware product page.

Client operating systems supported are Windows 7, 8, 8.1, or 10.

VM Requirements

Minimum RAM 4 GB
# CPUs 4
# Cores 4

Data Volume

The default data disk is 40 GB. You can attach additional SCSI data disks and they will be added to the storage pool after you reboot the VM. Please do not extend existing disks.


Turbo Beta

Admins can download the Turbo beta from the "Egnyte Apps" section of Egnyte builder.

1. In the Web UI, click on "Apps & Add-ons" in the top bar. Under "Egnyte Apps", download the Turbo beta.


2. Deployment

For VMware

a. Connect to your ESXi host via VMware vSphere client or vCenter

b. Click on "Deploy OVF Template" and provide the path to the OVA. Ensure you attach a data disk.

c. Start the VM by click on "Power on the Virtual Machine"

For Hyper-V

a. Extract the ZIP file for Turbo Beta for Hyper-V

b. In the Hyper-V Manager, under Actions click "Import Virtual Machine..." -->

c. Select the "Egnyte_Turbo" folder

d. On "Choose Import Type" page, select Copy the virtual machine

e. Right-click on the VM and select "Start" to power on the VM.

3. Open the console:


4. Login to the service account to set up your network.

5. Use any supported browser to navigate to http://{IP_ADDRESS}:8515

6. Authenticate to your Egnyte domain using admin credentials. Note that you need to use Egnyte authenticated credentials, not SSO.


7. Configure your Turbo device. After submitting, you will be directed to the status screen to see the installation progress.


Once the configuration is complete and your Turbo device is ready, the below status will appear.

8. Ensure Turbo is enabled for your domain in the Web UI under Settings → Applications → Turbo.


9. Navigate to details under "Devices" --> "Storage Devices".


10. Under "Settings" --> "Group Access", add the groups which should have access to this Turbo device.


You can search for any groups that are in your Egnyte domain.


11. Download Egnyte Connect Desktop App for Windows (version 2.0.3+) on users' laptops. A user can verify that he is "Turbo Connected" in the Desktop App Settings page.

Deciding between Storage Sync and Turbo

Both Turbo and Storage Sync are hybrid file-sharing and collaboration technologies.

Storage Sync is useful in scenarios that require offline access to files, 3rd party applications that rely on SMB or drive paths, or support for Mac clients. Click here to learn more about Storage Sync.

If you will have a stable internet connection and Windows clients, Turbo is the hybrid storage solution of choice. Users can connect to Turbo through Egnyte Connect Desktop App, which administrators can mass deploy to users.  All file and folder edits are propagated to the cloud using real-time sync. Turbo uses Egnyte cloud-based authentication and does not require a separate access point or user account.

Before Setting Up Turbo

1. Ensure that Users and Groups are created in the Egnyte Cloud. For more information, please refer to the Users and Groups article on the Helpdesk.

2. Whitelist the following domains with any filters or firewalls in your environment:

  • ICMP

Service Account

Open the console and login with the following credentials:

Username: admin

Password: turbocharged


You will be presented with the following options:


Set a Static IP

If your host network does not have DHCP enabled, the VM may fail to get an IP address dynamically. You will need to use the service account to assign a static IP address.

Select "1" and press enter. You will be prompted to enter the inputs to set a static IP.

Confirm Network Configuration is valid

Select "4" and press enter.

If you see the error "Breeze service is not running", please restart your VM.


If you see the error "Failed to get diagnostics data", you have no connectivity between the Internet and the VM. Please check your network connection.


Device Configuration


Selecting Folder for Sync

Select the folder that will be synced locally to this Turbo device. We recommend selecting folders that are frequently accessed or contain large files.

Upgrade Window

Turbo auto-upgrades in a predetermined window to ensure you have the latest features and security updates. An upgrade can result in a few minutes downtime of the Turbo device, during which your users will not be disrupted and automatically be redirected to the cloud. We recommend configuring the upgrade window daily during the nighttime, when users are not at work.


Known Issues

  • Users cannot move a folder selected for sync into a folder not selected for sync
  • Some Chrome extensions will interfere with Turbo UI capabilities.
